The Wall of Fame is a prized spot and award that many students at UC Davis compete and play for every quarter. From new incoming freshman to graduate students and faculty, The Wall of Fame and Rec Sports (formerly Intramural Sports) have been a prevalent part of many UC Davis experiences. There have been over 3,500 champions on the Wall of Fame since 1968 and more to come each year. With more than 20 traditional and non-traditional sports offered each year to the UC Davis community, there are plenty of opportunities to obtain a place on the coveted Wall of Fame.
The Intramural Wall of Fame was started in the late 1960’s by Gary J. Colberg, Director of Intramural Sports. The Wall was used to create a visible medium of pictures as a means of advertising and promoting the program through a display of those on-campus student and staff/faculty participants winning a championship event in the Intramural Sports Program. The initial photos were in black and white and manually developed and printed in the IM darkroom at Hickey Gym. There are a variety of campus publications such as the Cal Aggie, the Third World Forum and the annual On-Campus booklet produced by Student Affairs that featured the pictures of the champions. In fact the Cal Aggie had several full-page team pictures of the champs at the end of each quarter. The Wall of Fame will eventually be relocated to a spot within the newly renovated ARC.
