Dear Families,

All of us in Aquatics and Youth Programs hope you and your family are healthy, safe and well during this time.

We appreciate your patience throughout the decision-making process for Summer 2020. With the safety of our communities at the forefront of our priorities, we have canceled all Campus Recreation summer youth activities including Aquatics swim lessons and Youth Programs camps.

This decision was made by campus leadership after very careful consideration. Recent guidelines published by local health departments, and forthcoming guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding camp operations will drastically change the nature of camps, such as limited group sizes, daily health screening requirements, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), increased sanitation and much more. We want to provide a safe, enriching and fun experience for our participants, and believe these enhanced protocols will not be attainable given our availability of facilities and locations on campus.

We know this may come as an inconvenience and disappointment for many of you. We are disappointed as well. AJ, Gabe and I all have a love for camp and programming, and spend much of our year preparing for summer. Camp gives kids a safe place to try new things, gain independence and experience the magic and wonder of the long, carefree days of summer. My own kids love writing cheers for morning announcements, perfecting their jumps off the diving board at the Rec Pool, dress-up Fridays and most importantly, they love learning from our amazing UC Davis student staff. The thought of these students not being part of my kids’ summer is one of the hardest parts of all this.

Many camps are offering virtual camp experiences to their participants – some at a cost, others for free. We will not be offering this alternative; however, we will continue suggesting free resources and at-home activity ideas on Aggies At Home with the hope of getting your kids outside and staying active.

Both Aquatics and Youth Programs have hired some amazing staff for the upcoming summer. Counselors, instructors and lifeguards alike have been preparing to bring you and your children an amazing experience. We are working to provide them alternative employment. Both AJ and Gabe will continue to support other Campus Recreation units as we prepare to reopen our facilities.

We have already begun processing full refunds, and your original payment method should be credited by the end of May. Please note that processing times may vary by financial institution. If you have not received your refund by May 29, please email us. We will look into your specific situation and respond.

We thank you again for your patience and are so appreciative of your participation and interest in our programs. We look forward to seeing you all again soon, and will postpone the best summer ever to 2021.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Jeff, AJ and Gabe

P.S. From one parent to another…you are doing an impossible job. Whether you are working from home, going to work as an essential worker, teaching remotely, keeping your household going in whatever way that looks right now, or not working because of furloughs and layoffs...then on top of all that you are staying strong and connected to your children as you are thrust into teaching from home. All. Of. This. Is. Tough.

You are seen. Whatever you are feeling is real. We will get through this.

Be kind to yourself and others. –Jeff
