Community in and out of the Office
Of our many units in Campus Recreation lies Living Well. Down the hall on the first floor of the ARC, amazing students such as Juan Flores, a fourth-year Managerial Economics major, dedicate hours creating a wide range of indoor exercise options for our community. Now in his senior year, Juan has played an integral role in ensuring the positive impact within our community and exemplary team culture within the Living Well unit.
“Personal connection leads to buy-in,” he states, “The job is ten times more fun when you have relations with your team. Popping into office every so often makes a huge difference”.
Of the most memorable moments while being employed with Living Well, Juan states the many get togethers with his coworkers as the best times.
This “connection” is not only practiced within the Living Well team, but Juan continues to practice community with his clients every day.
“If you want to create change with someone, the personal aspect is as important as the teaching,” Juan mentions.
A veteran in his role, Juan consistently preaches community and personal engagement as a huge aspect of his responsibilities. He mentions the most rewarding part of his job is being able to enjoy health and sharing that joy with others. His passion for health has been a driving force towards bettering those around him.
How Living Well Prepares for the Future
Juan’s role at Living Well, both as a Personal Trainer and Student Manager, has given him an immense number of skills and experiences that will aid him in his future endeavors, especially from a technical aspect.
Juan mentions his direct Supervisor, Eric Chen, as an amazing leader who is more than happy to show him the administrative side and give him tasks to aid in his professional development.
Additionally, being a student manager has helped Juan immensely. From the transferable professional skills, assisting with staff management, amongst other things, have been great for him to prepare after college.
Advice for Future Students
Juan consistently mentions how lucky he was to earn this role.
“The anatomy of the coursework was a little difficult, but honestly the entire role was fun and full of support!” Juan mentions.
His advice to future and current Living Well student staff: Try and absorb as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
“The mentality of staying curious and continuously learning more...” is something Juan states is important when working with Living Well. Juan notes that an open mind with effort is what will lead you to success within Living Well.
For Juan, Living Well was not just a job, but a community that he undoubtedly had a hand in building its continued success. Campus Recreation is fortunate to have Juan, who is someone who truly represents “Come as You Are”.
