Lifeguard

The lifeguard position is part of the Department of Campus Recreation Aquatics unit, which supports the academic mission of UC Davis by providing outstanding recreation and leisure experiences and fostering a culture of engagement and community. The Aquatics position goals are to provide experiences that encourage leadership and team work, develop competence in recreation skills, make new friends, enhance participant’s connection to the community and environment and have fun.

Duties include: Guarding at Campus Recreation aquatic facilities and events. Work location is the UC Davis Recreation Pool, Hickey Pool, and some events at the Schaal Aquatics Center. Lifeguards are responsible for providing the safest and most pleasant environment for our patrons. Set up and take down (pool covers, lane lines and trash) for events is included as part of lifeguard responsibilities as well as attending locker room and office area; performing light facility maintenance tasks; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current certification in Lifeguard Training from the American Red Cross is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of MANDATORY SKILLS TEST is required prior to hiring.
  • Applicants must show proof of valid Lifeguard Training certification, First Aid for the Professional Rescuer, and CPR. EMSA/Title 22 certification is preferred. Prior experience in lifeguarding is a plus.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Head Guard

Oversee and coordinate lifeguard and cashier staff as well as daily operations at Rec and Hickey Pool.  Assist the Aquatics Coordinator and Student Manager(s) in oversight and implementation of policy and procedures for the pools.  This is including but not limited to peer management, equipment inventory, managing emergency drills and situations, providing exceptional customer service, leading staff trainings, and overseeing daily operations.  Must have current Lifeguard certification with one quarter of experience, and must possess strong leadership and problem-solving skills.

Student Manager

Oversee and coordinate lifeguard and cashier staff as well as daily operations at Rec and Hickey Pool.  Assist the Aquatics Coordinator in oversight and implementation of policy and procedures for the pools. Member Services

Student Employment

Member Services within the ARC and the Department of Campus Recreation comprises more than 125 student employees who invest their energy and creativity into providing a holistic wellness experience to the UC Davis community.  The department is a student-focused organization, placing an emphasis on student development and leadership opportunities.

 

Positions

Member Services Representative 

Member Services Representatives will oversee all member services activity; including but not limited to checking eligibility requirements of potential members, collecting and analyzing membership reports, selling community and affiliate memberships, reconciling sales, and monitoring facility access.

Recreation Attendant

Recreation Attendant are considered “designated staff.” Recreation Attendants are responsible for providing assistance with operational necessities, cleaning, equipment rental, facility set up, and reservations within the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC). 

Building Supervisor

Building Supervisors are responsible for all day-to-day facility operations of the facility, and will assist, as necessary, with aspects of programming and member/customer service. This position acts as the manager on duty during ARC and UCDHS Fitness Center operational hours. The Building Supervisor will supervise Recreation Attendants, Fitness Center Attendants, Member Services Leads, and other department staff as needed. This position will follow and supervise the daily schedule and the implementation of all recreation spaces and reservations. The Building Supervisor is considered an extension of the facility management, serving as a link between student staff and the professional staff.

All ARC staff are first responder, and are first aid, CPR, and AED certified.

Craft Center

Student Employment

The Craft Center is a student-focused organization, placing an emphasis on student development and leadership opportunities. Each of the 10 studio disciplines are overseen by a student. The position is a year long commitment. Look to Handshake during the Spring quarter for the studio manager position.

Volunteering

The Craft Center could not run without the efforts of our volunteers. Volunteer desk attendants comprise nearly half of our entire staff and are usually the contact our customers have with the Craft Center, either by telephone or at the front desk. In addition, they are responsible for maintaining the physical appearance of the foyer, front desk and labs. It is essential that volunteer desk attendants are trained to be the best resources of information and assistance possible, and that they feel a sense of commitment and ownership toward our goals for excellent customer service.

Due to the high level of interest in our volunteer program, we may not be able to accommodate everyone the quarter they are interested, but will keep your name on a waiting list so that you may join our staff as soon as there is an opening.


Requirements for Volunteering:

Volunteers serve as desk attendants to get essential training in Craft Center policies of registration, tool check-out, and phone procedures. Learn the basics of how we run our front desk and maintain our spaces! Shifts are a weekly set schedule of 5 hours. Daytime shifts may be broken-up to more than one day. Night and weekend shifts are a full 5 hour shift. It is important that you can commit to working a particular shift for the entire quarter. You are responsible to this commitment as you would be to any job.

The Craft Center is a fun and welcoming environment that offers affiliation with a community of interested craftspersons. On the job you may learn anything from screenprinting, to gallery installation, to ceramic kiln firing, and "off the job" you may enjoy sharing and exchanging knowledge about what you make.

All volunteers have free studio access to any studio they are qualified to use, as well as 10% off our resale items. New volunteers get half-off one class their first quarter volunteering, and can get one free class any consecutive quarter they volunteer.*

*To earn benefits, volunteers must complete their training and commitment of 5 hours/week. Benefits are non-cumulative and cannot be used beyond the quarter they are earned.

  • New Volunteer Sign-up and Orientation - contact the Craft Center by emailing craftcenter@campusrec.ucdavis.edu to be added to the waitlist. All UCD students and everyone over 18 years old is welcome to volunteer. The volunteer orientation  is where new volunteers are introduced to the facility and Craft Center mission. 
  • Tool Room Training is held before Craft Center classes start. This is a 2 hour session that introduces new volunteers to the layout of the Tool Room, our tool check-out procedure, volunteer responsibilities, the front desk arrangement, and our resale inventory.
  • First Shifts begin the first week the Craft Center open, and are devoted to covering basic front desk procedures. Training continues throughout the quarter.

Barn Supervisor

The Barn Supervisor is a student leadership position at the Equestrian Center. It is a part-time staff member appointment within the department of Campus Recreation & Unions. The responsibilities of the Barn Supervisor are centered on providing care to the equine residents and the highest level of customer service to the participants who use the center. The Barn Supervisor is responsible for feeding mornings and evenings, maintaining a clean facility, responding to emergencies, performing offered services at the EQC including turnout and blanketing, and providing light veterinary care as indicated.

Qualifications

  • Experience handling horses in a safe and knowledgeable manner.

  • Must complete ACU 101, CPR/ First Aid and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certifications, and all other unit, campus, and departmental trainings as required (within one month of being hired).

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.

  • Must be willing to drive a tractor, gator and use attachments such as a trailer and drag (training is provided).

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high levels of customer service at all times. Must be able to provide responsible and professional representation of the University to the public even in the absence of EQC management staff, or in the event of an emergency.

Facility Attendant

The Facility Attendant is a student leadership position at the Equestrian Center. It is a part-time staff member appointment within the department of Campus Recreation. The responsibilities of the Facility Attendant are centered on providing the highest level of customer service to the participants who use the Equestrian Center and the highest level of care to its equine residents. The Facility Attendant is responsible for welcoming and greeting visitors and program participants, responding to and answering phone calls and e-mail, compiling/organizing data, calculating attendance & visitor hours, and giving tours of the facility.

 

Qualifications

  • Horse handling skills and knowledge of basic horse husbandry/care is preferred.

  • Must complete ACU 101, CPR/ First Aid and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certifications, and all other unit, campus, and departmental trainings as required (within one month of being hired).

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high levels of customer service at all times. Must be able to provide responsible and professional representation of the University to the public even in the absence of EQC management staff, or in the event of an emergency.

  • Must be comfortable with answering emails, phone calls and questions in a professional manner.

  • Must be comfortable with using programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel.

  • Must be organized and detail oriented.

Riding Instructor

The Horseback Riding Instructor position at the Equestrian Center is a part-time staff member appointment through the department of Campus Recreation. The responsibilities of the Lesson Instructor are centered on providing expertise to program participants in a safe, fun, and educational manner using classical methods of riding. The Lesson Instructor must teach English or Western style of riding lessons to group and/or individual participants. The instructor must have the ability to evaluate needs of both horse and rider.  

 

Qualifications

  • Experience handling horses in a safe and knowledgeable manner.

  • Instructor must have theoretical knowledge, teaching skills, and demonstrated skills in riding.

  • Must be able to assess the abilities of both horse and rider and gauge the varying needs of the participants

  • Knowledge of basic tack and equipment care including cleaning and oiling tack and recognizing dirty, broken, or ill-fitting tack and equipment

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high levels of customer service at all times. Must be able to provide responsible and professional representation of the University to the public even in the absence of EQC management staff, or in the event of an emergency.

  • Must complete ACU 101, CPR/ First Aid and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certifications, and all other unit, campus, and departmental trainings as required (within one month of being hired).

Stall Cleaner

The stall and paddock cleaner position is a part-time staff member appointment within the department of Campus Recreation. The responsibilities of the stall and paddock cleaner are to clean horse areas in order to provide a safe and clean environment for the horses.  

Qualifications

  • Horse handling skills and knowledge of basic horse husbandry/care is preferred.

  • Must complete ACU 101, CPR/ First Aid and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certifications, and all other unit, campus, and departmental trainings as required (within one month of being hired).

Position Descriptions

Personal Trainer

Our personal trainers provide personal fitness instruction to the university community. They work autonomously and develop their own training sessions. They are responsible for providing safe, effective and motivating sessions while maintaining a controlled, yet fun environment. Our personal trainers hold internationally recognized certifications and are capable of providing assistance to individuals of varying ability and conditioning levels. Interview and Practical for this position are required. All of our personal trainers maintain current CPR/AED certifications. They may also instruct group fitness and Instructional classes for Living Well at the ARC if interested and needed. If you are interested in this position and are not yet certified, we occasionally offer an ACE Fitness Leadership Course to help participants prepare for the ACE national certification exam. For certified personal trainers, please submit an application (link located at the bottom of this page) to the Living Well Center and ignore any "class" questions.

Group Exercise Instructor

Our group exercise instructors teach our group exercise classes which are attended by students, faculty, staff and community members. The instructors choreograph and conduct their own routines and workouts and also provide their own music. The group exercise instructors are capable of providing advice and assistance coherent with safety and fitness guidelines. All of our instructors hold an internationally recognized Primary Fitness Certification. All of our group exercise instructors maintain current CPR/AED certifications. We prefer instructors with prior experience when hiring new group exercise instructors. If you are interested in this position and are not yet certified, we typically offer an ACE Fitness Leadership Course once per year to help participants prepare for the ACE national certification exam. For certified instructors, please submit an application (link located at the bottom of this page) to the Living Well Center.

Living Well Center Attendant/Studio Monitor

Living Well center attendants work under the direction of the assistant director of Living Well. Job duties include assisting in the management of all daily operations of the Living Well center as well as monitor Living Well programs at their respective studios. Specific duties include telephone desk reception, initiate sales, book appointments (Nutrition, Personal Training), assist with group exercise materials, and maintain the Living Well Center Resource Library and other administrative duties. Martial Arts Instructor

Our martial arts instructors teach two 90-minute classes per week of the martial arts style in which they specialize. Our instructors must have a Black Belt Degree or the equivalent in ranking system of the format they teach; prior teaching experience is preferred. Instructors are expected to observe participants to determine their physical qualifications and limitations, and to plan and conduct their classes in a manner that meets all participants’ needs. The instructors are capable of providing advice and assistance coherent with safety guidelines, and also are comfortable teaching with beginners. All of our martial arts instructors maintain current CPR/AED certifications.

Mind-Body Instructor

Our mind-body instructors teach 60 or 75-minute classes of one or more of the various Pilates and yoga classes we offer. Instructors must have received certification, such as a Yoga Alliance RYT 200 or a certification through the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA). The instructors choreograph and conduct their own classes and provide their own music. The instructors are capable of providing advice and assistance coherent with safety guidelines, and also are comfortable teaching with beginners. The instructors observe students to determine physical and technical qualifications and limitations and plan programs to meet students' needs. All of our mind-body instructors maintain current CPR/AED certifications.

Dance Instructor

Our dance instructors teach one or more 60 minute classes per week of the various dance classes we offer. Instructors are expected to have at least two years of teaching experience relevant to the class they desire to teach. The instructors choreograph and conduct their own routines and provide their own music. The instructors are capable of providing advice and assistance coherent with safety guidelines, and also are comfortable teaching with beginners. The instructors observe students to determine physical and artistic qualifications and limitations and plan programs to meet students' needs. All of our dance instructors maintain current CPR/AED certifications. For certified dance instructors, please submit an application (link located at the bottom of this page) to the Living Well Center.

Small-Group Instructor

Our small-group instructors teach one or more of the various small group classes we offer, such as TRX, H.E.A.T. (High Energy Athletic Training), Fit for Fire (Bootcamp in partnership with the UCD Fire Department) and other types of formats. The instructors plan and conduct their own workout routines and provide their own music. The instructors are capable of providing advice and assistance coherent with safety guidelines, and also are comfortable teaching  beginners. The instructors observe participants to determine physical qualifications and limitations and plan programs to meet participants’ individual needs and abilities. All of our Small Group Instructors maintain current CPR/AED certifications and most also work for us as Personal Trainers. A primary certification is required, and we prefer instructors with prior experience and training. However, we are also interested in professionally developing our Personal Trainers and instructors to fill this role.

Whitewater Rafting Guides

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Water Sports Student Manager and Career Staff, Raft Guides lead weekly whitewater rafting trips throughout Spring and Summer. Trips take place on the South Fork of the American River and generally are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays. Guides are responsible for trip preparation, execution, cleanup, as well as driving 8 passenger vans to and from the river. No experience necessary, we will train the right person.

REQUIRED TRAININGS/ CERTIFICATIONS

  • All Raft Guides for Outdoor Adventures must be able to attend ALL aspects of our guide training (unless they have 3 years previous commercial rafting experience). Guide training dates are as follows:
    • Classroom Sessions - February 28th, March 6th, March 13th 6:30pm - 9:30pm
    • Field Instruction - March 23- March 30, 2024
  • Wilderness First Aid - all Outdoor Adventures guides must obtain Wilderness First Aid training prior to their first trip. This training is provided by Outdoor Adventures.
  • Swift Water Rescue - Swift Water Rescue certification required for all Outdoor Adventures Raft Guides. This certification is provided during the Field Instruction element of guide training. 
  • Additional training days as necessary: It is common for new guides to need additional training after guide school. New trainees can attend any trip as an Assistant Guide to gain more experience until they feel they are able to pass a skills test. Only after the skills test has been completed can a new trainee sign up to work trips.

Competitive Sports Recorder

Recorders are part of the Competitive Sports division of Campus Recreation. They are responsible for most of the administrative paperwork and documentation for Sport Clubs and input all Rec Sports information into the department database. Rec Sports Official (Referee)

Rec Sports officials are responsible for the set up and take down of Intramural fields and courts. They enforce the rules of the game and maintain a safe and fun environment for students and community members to enjoy sports. They are the first impression of Rec Sports for many participants and thus are held to a high standard in regards to professionalism. This is an entry-level job that, based on performance, can lead to opportunities for promotion. Additional info located on Rec Sports Official's Clinic page. Pay is $16 per hour. Competitive Sports Supervisor

Supervisors are present at every Sport Club practice, game, tournament and home event as well as all Rec Sports games. They are responsible for ensuring that all Sport Club participants have filled out the proper forms before practicing and for supervising/managing the Rec Sports officials during Rec Sports shifts. Supervisors are also responsible for risk management and act as first responders in the event of an injury. Pay is $16.50 per hour. Handshake number TBA

Youth Programs is a summer camp that takes place on the UC Davis campus for all ten weeks of summer. Kids of all ages from the Sacramento and Davis community come for fun and engaging day camps - from sports camps, craft camps, music camps, and many more, Youth Programs has a position for you no matter what you’re interested in.

Counselor

Job Purpose
Youth Programs serves youth up to grade 7 during the summer months. The goals of Youth Programs are to provide experiences that encourage leadership and team work, develop competence in recreation skills, make new friends, enhance participants’ connection to the community and environment, and have fun. Counselors will be assigned, depending on interest and skill level, to one of the following camp areas: Craft, Dance, General Recreation, Sports, Music, Outdoor Adventures, Vet Med, or Afternoon Adventures.

Description
Under the supervision of the Youth Programs Coordinator and student administrative team, counselors will, but are not limited to:

  • Safely and effectively supervise and instruct youth in one of the described camp areas (Craft, Dance, General Recreation, Bowling, Sports, Music, Vet Med, or Afternoon Adventures)
  • Build and maintain rapport with parents/guardians, other staff members, and youth participants
  • Help participants to achieve camp goals of leadership and teamwork, competence in recreation skills, connection to community and environment, and having fun
  • Attend to injuries/illness and immediately correct any unsafe/unhealthy conditions
  • Maintain supplies and facilities
  • Evaluate weekly sessions and make adjustments as necessary
  • Complete paperwork as needed and assist student manager and other camp counselors during activities, transfers, and check-in/out

Counselors must be able to work the entire summer from June 24-August 16, 2024 (except July 4). Counselors must be available for 40 hours per week, 8:00a-3:30p, Monday-Friday. Counselors placed in Afternoon Adventures must be available to work from 10:30a-6p, Monday-Friday. Counselors should not exceed 40 hours in any given work week.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children preferred; must have ability to supervise youth in large facilities and outdoors
  • Willingness to establish a professional rapport with campers, parents, and administrators in an energetic and enthusiastic manner
  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude, creative energy, and commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Experience in the area in which you would like to instruct (dance, sports, crochet, drawing, etc.)
  • Knowledge of UC Davis community resources
  • Must be able to swim (or stand) in the Rec Pool
  • Must be able to work the entire summer from June 24-August 16, 2024
  • May not take vacation days prior to July 4; vacation days must be approved 2 weeks in advance
  • Have current certification for CPR/AED and First Aid for Adults and Pediatric by the start of camp 
  • Must complete supplemental application and upload a resume (cover letter recommended but not required)
  • Subject to a Livescan Fingerprint Background Check, including a pull from the DOJ and FBI in addition to a check in the National Sex Offender Registry
  • All Youth Programs staff, including counselors, are considered mandated reporters as defined by the State of California
