The UC Davis Craft Center: Fostering Creativity and Student Development

Nestled behind the silo and gunrock pub, the Craft Center serves as more than just a creative hub—it is also a space for student growth and professional development. While the center offers an extensive array of hands-on workshops in ceramics, woodworking, glass art, textiles, and more, it also provides students with unique leadership and management opportunities that prepare them for future careers.

The Craft Center believes that joy and fulfillment are essential in student roles. Students are motivated by the opportunity to be part of a creative community, learn new skills, and contribute to a thriving artistic environment. Perks of employment include access to well-equipped studios, connections with local artists, and the satisfaction of teaching others. Students are encouraged to step into leadership roles, gaining firsthand experience in guiding others while developing confidence in their abilities.

The Craft Center invests deeply in its student staff by offering structured mentorship and leadership opportunities. Student managers receive weekly one-on-one meetings with their Assistant Director, where they are guided through professional development tailored to their needs. In addition, they have a weekly group meeting where managers rotate leading from a chair position, fostering a supportive and uplifting environment. These managers also oversee studio operations, programming, and hiring, allowing them to experience both sides of the interview process. Some have even served on the Council on Student Affairs and Fees (COSAF) and the Vice Chancellor’s Cabinet, gaining first hand exposure to university governance.

Many former Craft Center students have continued to share their skills beyond UC Davis. Four recent graduates have become instructors at the Davis Arts Center, demonstrating the long-lasting impact of their training. Others have pursued advanced studies, entering esteemed ceramics master’s programs. The journey from a student user to a volunteer, instructor, and even a manager reflects the center’s commitment to fostering professional and personal growth.

The UC Davis Craft Center is more than a workspace—it is a launchpad for personal and professional growth. Through leadership development, professional training, and a strong sense of community, the Craft Center empowers students to explore, create, and inspire. Whether as users, volunteers, instructors, or managers, students leave the Craft Center with invaluable skills and experiences that shape their futures.
