Tips on Returning to the Gym

By: Esther Garcia, Healthy Aggies Intern

At the start of the pandemic, many people began to worry when they found out that gyms were closing. Dumbbells, resistance bands, stationary bikes and treadmills were out of stock or overpriced on almost every equipment website. But now, as many counties began to move up COVID case tiers, gyms are beginning to reopen with regulations. (A little reminder, the UC Davis ARC will open November 1.) Many people are aching to get back into the gym but before we get back, here are a few things to keep in mind.

ARC and Craft Center Reopening November 1

Please see below for an update on our plan to return to in-person operations at the ARC and Craft Center as Yolo County transitions into red tier status.

The county tier status is dynamic and may shift in either direction in the coming weeks. Campus Recreation will be implementing a gradual and phased return to in-person operations for the ARC and Craft Center in consideration of the significant capacity restrictions and lead time required to adjust staffing and facility protocols to meet evolving guidance.

Outdoor Diversity: Conversations for a Revolution

Thao Nguyen worked for Outdoor Adventures between 2018 and 2020 while working on her degree in Studio Arts at UC Davis. During that time she worked as a guide for both the whitewater rafting, and sea kayaking programs, worked in the Rental Center, and was ultimately promoted to student manager of the water program. She graduated in June of 2020 but has continued to be a presence at Outdoor Adventures working on this article project as well as committing to co-chair our newly developed Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force.

ARC Reservations Open June 29

Update 7/13/20: Please note that due to a state mandate, the ARC is closed until further notice.

As Campus Recreation reopens the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC), it is important to note that there are new procedures and initial restrictions in place beginning June 29, 2020. Please see below for more information.

Desk Stretches for Home or Office

Whether you're studying or working at home, staying in one position while doing repetitive motions is typical during periods of prolonged sitting. We should all get out of that rut by scheduling regular breaks to stretch at our desks and study spaces. To help students, faculty and staff stay healthy, flexible and well in our study and work spaces, our partners at the Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) Physical Therapy department developed the stretches below that you can work into your own daily study and work routine.

Campfire Songs with Jake - "Ain’t No Sunshine"

A new campfire song comes out Friday, May 22! Each week Jake plays a new song for us, as well as teaches us guitar techniques to learn ourselves. Today Jake is explaining how to fingerpick on the guitar. He shows us his favorite basic technique that is easy to learn for all levels. All you need is a guitar to play along. If you don’t have a guitar then just enjoy Jake singing “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers. It’s worth a listen!
